Savar Health Management Institute to Open on 1 January, Administrative Training for Doctors to Begin

Staff Reporter

The long-neglected Bangladesh Institute of Health Management in Savar will formally open on 1 January. Administrative training programmes for doctors will begin at the institution from that date.

State Minister for Health Dr M A Muhit announced this to reporters on Saturday (31 October) at noon after inspecting the institution's infrastructure in Savar. He said all renovation work at the institution would be finished by 31 December and it would be made ready for use.

Before the inspection, the state minister held a meeting with local public representatives, politicians, the health secretary, the secretary general of the Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB), engineers of the Public Works Department and other concerned government officials.

The meeting decided that within the next two weeks a joint team of the Health Ministry, the Directorate General of Health Services and the Public Works Department would visit the site and prepare an inventory of damaged and stolen equipment. The Public Works Department will also take steps within one to two days to arrange seating for officials and to start the sub-station.

After the inspection, the state minister said the institution, which had fallen into neglect through mismanagement under the previous government, would be built into a national training centre to turn the country's doctors into skilled administrators.

He said the health system had been destroyed under the previous government through waste of public money and corruption, and that the present government, after taking office through people's votes, inherited a broken health system. He said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had announced 'We have a plan' after returning to the country on 25 December last year, and that work was under way under that plan to rebuild the health system and take healthcare to people's doorsteps.

The state minister said the present government wants to practise politics of public service, not politics of public rallies. The country would be taken forward by staying connected with the people and resisting all kinds of corruption and wrongdoing, he said.

Present during the inspection were local member of parliament Dewan Mohammad Salauddin, Health Ministry secretary Dr A N M Bazlur Rashid, DAB secretary general Zahirul Islam Shakil, and additional directors general of the health directorate Professor Dr Foyara Tasnim and Professor Dr Md Zahid Raihan.
