HSC examination results were published across the country on Saturday (31 October). On that day, grief rather than joy weighed on the family home of Rakibul Islam in Udyampur Dakshinpara village, Hemnagar Union, Gopalpur upazila of Tangail.

Rakibul Islam scored GPA-5 in the HSC. But he will never return home to share the joy of that success.

Rakibul Islam was the younger son of Khademul Islam of the village. His GPA-5 was confirmed by his elder brother, Zahirul Islam Jibon.

After finishing his HSC examinations at Ghatail Cantonment Public School and College, Rakibul had gone to Dhaka to prepare for admission to the University of Dhaka.

His dream was to pursue higher education, serve the country and make his parents proud. If he did well, he planned to distribute sweets at home and share his joy with relatives and neighbours.

But that long-awaited day has arrived carrying deep grief. In the home where there should have been celebration today, there is now only crying and the pain of loss.

According to police information, Abdullah Mamun was arrested in Dhaka on 16 September on allegations of murdering Rakibul.

It is alleged that after the murder, a video was made using artificial intelligence (AI) technology showing Rakibul alive, sent to his family, and a ransom was demanded.

Hoping to get their son back alive, the family paid four lakh taka, but he never returned. Police later recovered his body from Dimla in Nilphamari.

Legal proceedings against those responsible in the incident are under way, according to police information.

Rakibul's elder brother Zahirul Islam Jibon said: "My brother dreamed of becoming a barrister. He would make us all proud. My brother was very talented in his studies. He also got GPA-5 in the SSC. I dreamed about my brother."

He said: "Today the HSC results have been announced. My brother got GPA-5. But my brother is no more."

Zahirul Islam Jibon added: "Those who murdered my brother should be brought under the law and punished. I want justice for my brother's murder."
