Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon has said there are around 1.34 million seats available for admission to higher education this year. Every student who has passed will get the opportunity to enrol, he said.

The results of the HSC and equivalent examinations were published on Saturday (31 October). The education minister made the remarks at a programme at the Secretariat held on the occasion.

This year, under 11 education boards, 646,685 of the 1,240,798 candidates passed the HSC and equivalent examinations. The average pass rate stands at 52.12 percent.

A total of 40,084 students achieved GPA-5 this year. Among them, 20,363 are boys and 19,721 are girls.

Candidates who failed in a maximum of one or two subjects this year will get the chance to sit again within a month, only in the subjects they failed. The number of candidates who failed in one or two subjects this year is 422,905.

At present, in public examinations such as the SSC and HSC, a candidate who fails in one or more subjects has to wait a year and sit the following year's examination. They may retake only the failed subjects or, if they wish, all subjects. But failing in just one or two subjects forces a student to wait a long year, which, besides setting back their academic life, also creates additional mental stress.

In this year's HSC and equivalent results, no candidate passed from 293 institutions in the country; in other words, every candidate at those institutions failed. On the other hand, the number of institutions with a 100 percent pass rate is 139.
