ICC Awards to Return in 2027 After Two Years, Covering 2025 and 2026 Performances
The International Cricket Council (ICC) is considering a major change to how cricket's best performers are honoured. While its annual awards have so far been announced on digital platforms and social media, cricket's top governing body is now planning a glamorous ceremony.
The ICC wants to turn the event into a major occasion in world sport, modelled on football's Ballon d'Or or the NFL Honors in the United States. After a two-year break, the ICC Awards are set to return in 2027.
Performances from 2025 and 2026 will be considered for the returning edition. A decision is being taken to combine two years of performances into a single awards cycle.
The organisation's aim is to bring cricket's best players, teams and organisers onto the same stage and celebrate their achievements on a larger scale.
An ICC source confirmed the plan to The Guardian. The decision to hold back the 2025 awards announcement was part of the plan to rethink the format of the event with that goal in mind.
An ICC spokesperson told The Guardian: 'For several years the ICC has given its annual awards digitally. But we consciously delayed the 2025 edition to rethink what this event should look like and what it can achieve.'
The spokesperson added: 'As a result of that review, we are now working on a new structure for the ICC Awards. It will return in 2027, with 2025-26 treated as one season. Our aim is to create a broader and more meaningful stage to celebrate cricket's best players, teams and achievements.'
The purpose of the move is to raise the prestige and importance of the awards. The organisation wants to turn the event, limited to digital platforms in recent years, into a large in-person ceremony. However, details about the format, venue, award categories and winner selection process have not yet been announced.
