An NGO field worker has allegedly been beaten and robbed of cash while collecting a loan instalment in Tala upazila of Satkhira.

The incident took place at around 10:30am on Sunday in Ataroi village of the upazila. The victim, Md Gias Uddin, is a field worker of the Tala branch of Jagorani Chakra Foundation; he has filed a written complaint with the police station.

The accused, Suman Sardar, 36, is the son of the late Bablu Sardar of Ataroi village.

According to the complaint, Suman Sardar's wife Khadija Begum took a loan of Tk 99,000 from Jagorani Chakra Foundation on February 23 for a term of 18 months; under the agreement, instalments of Tk 6,633 were to be paid on the 7th of each month. Field worker Gias Uddin alleged that the instalments were not being paid regularly and time was being stalled with various excuses.

The complaint says that when Gias Uddin went to Suman's house on Sunday morning to ask for October's overdue instalment, Suman hurled abusive language at him. When he protested, he was punched and kicked. At one stage, he was bitten on his left hand, leaving injuries on different parts of his body.

It is also alleged that Tk 30,000 in cash was snatched from him at the time. Gias Uddin further alleged that he was threatened with beating and death if he came to ask for instalment money in future.

However, the accused's wife Khadija Begum denied the allegation. She said that when she told Gias Uddin she would pay the instalment money on November 4, he became angry and beat her with a broom. She also claimed her husband was not at home at the time of the incident.

Kamruzzaman, manager of the Tala branch of Jagorani Chakra Foundation, said, 'My worker has been beaten. A complaint has been filed with the police station over the incident.'

Tala Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Alim said, 'We have received a written complaint about the incident. Necessary action will be taken after investigation.'
