Havertz goal gives Arsenal first Anfield win in 14 years and top spot in the Premier League
Arsenal have climbed to the top of the English Premier League by beating Liverpool 1–0 at Anfield. The win gave the Gunners their first victory at Anfield in 14 years.
The winning goal came in the 16th minute from German striker Kai Havertz. When Liverpool's defence lost its way trying to clear the ball from its own box, Declan Rice picked it up, and Havertz finished his low cross with a fine tap-in to put the Gunners ahead. Mikel Arteta's side held on to that goal to win the match.
Arsenal fans had waited a long time for this win at Liverpool's ground. They had almost forgotten what it felt like to beat Liverpool at Anfield; now they have tasted that forgotten feeling again.
Just before half-time, Liverpool launched a storm of attacks. Florian Wirtz's curling free-kick came back off the crossbar. Moments later, Alexis Mac Allister wasted a golden chance by heading the ball over the bar, so the hosts could not draw level.
After the break, however, the Gunners kept Liverpool bottled up with excellent defending. Withstanding the intense pressure at Anfield, Arteta's men left the field with a 1–0 win.
The victory takes Arsenal to the top of the Premier League with 24 points from 9 matches, overtaking Manchester City. The north London club fully capitalised on City's home defeat to Brighton; City now have 21 points.
Liverpool, meanwhile, suffered their second defeat of the season and dropped to fifth in the points table, nine points behind Arsenal.
