Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson's return to the field lasted all of one play. Starting on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills for the first time in nearly a month, he injured his right thumb on the Ravens' first offensive snap of the game and was done for the day.

It was Jackson's first game since October 4. As he threw the football, his hand hit the arm of Buffalo defensive end Greg Rousseau. He immediately grabbed the thumb, in obvious pain.

Jackson was first taken to the Ravens' medical tent and was then escorted straight to the locker room with a towel wrapped around his entire right hand.

The team initially reported that Jackson was questionable to return with a right thumb injury. Within a few minutes, however, it said he was done for the game.

The quick change in status suggests the Ravens may be dealing with a dislocated or fractured thumb. For a quarterback, an injured thumb on the throwing hand makes it impossible to spin the football properly.

Tyler Huntley took over at quarterback for the Ravens for the remainder of the game.

Jackson had played four games this season before Sunday and had been highly productive, completing 68 of 96 passes for 967 yards, six touchdowns and one interception, while adding 144 rushing yards and a touchdown. The Ravens were 3-1 in his starts.

Jackson suffered a high-ankle sprain in the October 4 victory over Tennessee and had missed the past three games, with his mobility and ability to tolerate the pain remaining the primary concerns around his return.

If the worst fears about a dislocation or fracture are confirmed, Jackson will probably miss more than just the remainder of this game. The report described it as a breaking story that would be updated as more information becomes available.
