In Bagadi Union of Chandpur Sadar Upazila, visually impaired elder brother Shahjahan Patwary (60) has died after allegedly being beaten by his younger brother and the brother's wife over a property dispute. The incident took place on Monday evening (November 2) at the Patwary house in Nijgachhtala village of the union.

The deceased Shahjahan Patwary was the son of the late Bazlul Gani Patwary of that house. He was a recipient of the government disability allowance. He leaves behind his wife, four daughters and one son.

According to local residents, Shahjahan had long been in dispute over property with his younger brother Shah Alam Patwary (50). Over this, Shah Alam and his wife allegedly beat the elder brother frequently.

On Monday evening, too, the two allegedly beat Shahjahan together. At one stage he was left in a bamboo grove beside the house. He later died there, locals claimed.

On receiving the news, Sub-Inspector Mujib of Chandpur Model Police Station went to the scene and recovered the body. The body was later taken to the police station.

Local union parishad member Zakir Hossain confirmed the incident, saying Shahjahan was visually impaired and a government allowance recipient. A property dispute had been running between the two brothers, and attempts had been made several times locally to settle it. He said he learned through locals that the body had been taken to the police station.

Ferdous Hossain, sub-inspector and second officer of Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station, said police recovered the man's body on receiving the news and brought it to the station. The incident will be investigated and necessary legal action taken, he said.
