Bayern Beat Atletico 2-0 in Madrid as Karl and Laimer Score, Kane Held Goalless

Bayern Munich won 2-0 away to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday night (November 3). Both Bayern goals came in the second half — Lennart Karl scored in the 54th minute and Konrad Laimer in the 74th.
Atletico had the first chance of the match. In the second minute Julian Alvarez shot off target, letting Bayern off the hook. Pablo Barrios and Alvarez tried again afterwards, but neither could find the net.
Bayern gradually took control of the match. Lennart Karl and Konrad Laimer both went close in the first half. In the 27th minute Harry Kane had a major chance, but his volley from inside the box missed the target. Aleksandar Sorloth also failed to take a good opportunity, and the first half ended goalless.
Bayern increased the pressure right after the break. In the 46th minute Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak saved a shot from Joshua Kimmich. Kane also had a chance afterwards, but his effort was unsuccessful. It was a goalless night for the English striker Kane — he created chance after chance but could not find the net.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 54th minute. When Atletico defender Robin Le Normand was late clearing the ball, Karl seized the chance, took the ball and beat Oblak from close range to put Bayern ahead. It was the first Champions League goal of the season for the 18-year-old midfielder.
Atletico tried to equalise after conceding, but could not break through Bayern's defence. Instead the visitors doubled the lead in the 74th minute — receiving the ball from Harry Kane, Laimer scored with a powerful shot from inside the box.
Dayot Upamecano had a chance to extend the lead late on. One of his shots hit the crossbar and returned, and a later goal by him was disallowed for a foul. For Atletico, David Hancko also had an opportunity, but his effort went off target.
With the win, Bayern have risen to eighth in the Champions League league-phase table with 8 points from two wins and two draws in four matches. Atletico Madrid, after their second defeat in four matches, have dropped to 22nd with 4 points.
