Barrister Mohammad Asaduzzaman Bhuiyan Fuad, general secretary of the Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party), could not appear before the International Crimes Tribunal to explain himself in a contempt of court case because of illness. Stricken with dengue, he applied through his lawyer for one month's time.

On Wednesday (November 4), Tribunal-1 passed its order in the matter. The court set the next hearing date for November 23 and directed Fuad to appear in person on that day.

Fuad had earlier been summoned on Sunday (November 1) over allegations of making adverse remarks about the tribunal's trials and verdicts on crimes against humanity. Tribunal-1, acting on its own motion, had directed him to appear on November 4 and explain his remarks.

Speaking about the tribunal's trial process at a recent AB Party event, Fuad had said, 'Here, transactions are happening by the sackful.' His remark was alleged to be contemptuous of the court.

It was in that context that he was summoned to the tribunal. As he could not appear on Wednesday, an application for time was filed through his lawyer, and the court set November 23 as the new date.
