Young man dies after falling from Haji Tower roof in Muladi, police suspect suicide from CCTV footage

A young man named Siam bin Taslim, 22, has died after falling from the roof of a building in Muladi, Barisal. He was rescued in a critically injured state from below a Haji Tower building on Thana Road in the municipality at around 3:45pm on Wednesday (4 November). He was taken to the Muladi Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.
Police said CCTV footage from the building and its surroundings shows Siam climbing the stairs to the roof alone. He later jumped from there and fell below. Police's initial assessment is that it was a case of suicide.
Siam was the only son of Md Taslim Sardar of Khalashirchar village in Muladi Sadar Union. He worked at a company in Dhaka. He lost his job about two months ago, after which family members were trying to send him abroad.
Local residents said there are three buildings named Haji Tower on Thana Road. Construction work was under way on the fifth floor of the building adjoining the road. At around 3:45pm on Wednesday they saw a young man lying below that building. Hearing the sound of the fall, local people and police rescued him and took him to the Upazila Health Complex.
On the way to hospital, one person recognised Siam and informed his family members. His father Taslim Sardar later went to the hospital and identified his son's body.
The deceased's uncle Md Ruhul Amin said Siam worked at a company in Dhaka and lost his job about two months ago, after which the family was trying to send him abroad. On Wednesday he went out after having lunch at home. Ruhul Amin went to the hospital at around 4pm and saw Siam's body there.
Siam's father Taslim Sardar said they have no relatives or acquaintances in the Haji Tower or Thana Road area. They know nothing about why his son went there.
Muladi police station officer-in-charge Khandaker Md Sohel Rana said the young man died after jumping from the roof of the first Haji Tower building. CCTV footage from the building and its surroundings shows him climbing the stairs to the roof alone and later jumping down. An unnatural death case has been filed at the police station over the incident.
