West Indies 180 for 4 at Tea in Sylhet Test as Hasan Breaks 131-Run Stand; Jangoo Heads Towards a Century

Bangladesh raised strong hopes by taking three early wickets in the Sylhet Test, but the hosts could not hold on to that momentum. West Indies fought back through Amir Jangoo and debutant Kevin Wickham to take the second session for themselves.

The Caribbean side added 94 runs in the second session and reached 180 for 4 in 55 overs before the tea break.

In the morning session, West Indies were in trouble at 27 for 3 after two strikes from Taskin Ahmed and one wicket from Hasan Mahmud. But Amir Jangoo and Kevin Wickham built resistance for the fourth wicket, adding an unbroken 59 runs before lunch.

That stand grew even stronger in the second session, with the pair adding 131 runs together. Wickham reached a fifty on his Test debut. At the other end, Jangoo also batted with confidence; after his fifty, he moved towards a century. It is the second fifty-plus innings of his Test career.

Bangladesh also had a chance to dismiss Jangoo. The left-hander failed to time a pull shot properly against a short ball from Hasan Mahmud, and the ball went straight back to Hasan, but he could not hold on to the low catch.

In the end, it was Hasan himself who broke the stand by dismissing Wickham. The debutant batter was bowled as he played a length ball without moving his feet, and had to stop at 61 runs.

Although Wickham's 131-run stand with Jangoo was broken, by then the pair had taken West Indies into a strong position.

At the tea break, Jangoo was unbeaten on 76, with Justin Greaves batting on 16 alongside him. For Bangladesh, Taskin Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud took two wickets each.

As in the first Test, the three spinners — Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taijul Islam and Nayeem Hasan — have so far produced lacklustre performances in this match, according to the report.
