Five five-wicket hauls against five countries: Hasan Mahmud joins Lyon in Test history
Bangladesh pacer Hasan Mahmud has entered a rare record in Test cricket by taking five wickets in an innings against the West Indies in the second Test. It is the fifth five-wicket haul of his Test career.
With this haul, Hasan has become the second bowler in the world and the first pacer in cricket history whose first five five-wicket hauls have come against five different countries.
Before him, the only bowler with such a feat in Test cricket was Australia spinner Nathan Lyon. Hasan's five hauls have come against Australia, Pakistan and India, as well as the West Indies and Afghanistan.
Hasan now also holds the record for the most five-wicket hauls among Bangladesh pace bowlers. He had been joint top with former pacer Shahadat Hossain on four each; he has now moved clear at the top on his own.
This is Hasan's first five-wicket haul on home soil. He had taken five wickets against Afghanistan last October, and has repeated the success only about a month later.
Hasan, who took two wickets on the first day of the match, struck twice at the start of the second day. In the 82nd over of the innings he bowled Amir Jangoo, who had been unbeaten on 111 overnight. Jangoo was dismissed for 133 off 212 balls, with 13 fours and two sixes.
On the very next ball, Hasan had new batter Roston Chase caught behind by Liton Das.
A hat-trick chance then followed. An lbw appeal against Joshua Bishop was given out by the umpire, but Bishop survived on review, leaving the hat-trick unfulfilled.
The contest then centred on Bishop. The West Indies batter was dropped off Hasan's own bowling when a return catch slipped through both hands, and in a later over he also hit Hasan for two consecutive fours.
But on the first ball of the 90th over, Hasan finally dismissed Bishop to complete his five wickets. Wicketkeeper Liton Das stumped Bishop off Hasan's bowling.
