Hridoy's double century in Sylhet Test, Bangladesh end the day with him unbeaten on 242

Staff Reporter

Bangladesh are in a strong position at the end of the third day of the Sylhet Test. At stumps, West Indies trail by 23 runs.

Coming out to bat today after being on the back foot yesterday, Bangladesh did not start well either. Mushfiqur Rahim and Liton Das departed, leaving the team disappointed.

Then Tawhid Hridoy took charge as the team's saviour. On the day of his maiden Test century, he went on to score a double century as well.

In the end, although the other batters were dismissed at the other end, West Indies could not dismiss Hridoy. The middle-order batter left the field unbeaten on 242.

Along with the double century, Hridoy also set a record for the highest score. His innings at the Sylhet ground has become a memorable day for Bangladesh cricket.

After such batting, Hridoy is receiving praise from Tigers head coach Phil Simmons.

At the press conference at the end of the day, Simmons said, 'We always tell the boys, when an opportunity comes, grab it and make good use of it. When you are on the field, the responsibility is yours. You have to do whatever the team needs. Whatever we expected from Hridoy, today he has shown it all.'

'Hridoy's innings was extraordinary. Truly an unbelievable innings. Even with fielders on the boundary, he hit fours and sixes. Overall, his effort was superb. He understood the match situation very well. When to play shots, when to give the strike to the last three batters — he handled everything brilliantly.'

After the quick dismissals of Mushfiqur Rahim and Liton Das, Bangladesh were under pressure. Hridoy pulled the team out of that pressure. Holding one end, he took the team to a strong position.

Even as the batters at the other end kept returning one by one, Hridoy remained unshaken. Staying unbeaten till the end of the day, he proved that when given the opportunity, he can play a big innings for the team.

This double century at the Sylhet ground made Hridoy's maiden Test century even more special. A double century on the day of a first century is a rare feat in Bangladesh cricket.

At the end of the third day, Bangladesh are in a good position and West Indies are 23 runs behind. Riding on Hridoy's unbeaten 242, Bangladesh are now in the driving seat in the match.
