Brother of BNP Leader Arrested in Tangail for Sharing Facebook Post About Minister

Staff Reporter

Police in Tangail have arrested a man named Badal Mia (48) on charges of sharing social media posts about Liberation War Affairs Minister Ahmed Azam Khan and his Assistant Private Secretary (APS) Sadekul Islam Sabuj. A case has been filed against him under two sections of the Cyber Security Act 2026.

The arrested Badal Mia is the younger brother of former upazila BNP president and former upazila chairman Kazi Shahidul Islam. The other two accused in the case are Tanvir Ahsan Suman and Badal’s other brother Shahadat Mia.

Police said Badal Mia was sent to jail through the court on Friday (6 November) afternoon.

According to the case statement, Tanvir Ahsan Suman posted from his Facebook ID in a Facebook group named ‘Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad Kendriya Command Council’, using a photo of Ahmed Azam Khan, the member of parliament for Tangail-8 (Basail-Sakhipur) and Liberation War Affairs Minister.

In that post, the minister was described as a person opposed to the Liberation War and his removal was demanded. The post was later shared by Shahadat Mia, the second accused in the case, from his own Facebook ID.

Another post was made from a Facebook page named ‘Sakhipur Ebong Deshbidesher News’ using a photo of the minister’s APS Sadekul Islam Sabuj. The post read, ‘Shoshurbari’r lok Natore-e PS Sabuj’.

On 6 November, a man named Ibadul Islam filed the case at Basail police station over these posts. The case, filed under sections 25(1) and 27(1) of the Cyber Security Act 2026, names three people and lists three to four more unnamed accused.

Basail police station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Alamgir Kabir said a case has been filed against the accused under sections 25(1) and 27(1) of the Cyber Security Act 2026, and the arrested Badal Mia has been sent to jail through the court.

Meanwhile, former upazila BNP president and former upazila chairman Kazi Shahidul Islam has claimed that the case was filed out of political vengeance.
