Why is Messi silent on Ronaldo's retirement? Fans are asking
Cristiano Ronaldo has brought his international career with Portugal to an end. After his retirement, many former and current stars paid tribute to him. But one name is missing from that list, and it stands out clearly: Lionel Messi.
Even after 48 hours passed since Ronaldo's retirement, the Argentine legend's silence has stirred debate among fans.
Although there were signs that his dispute with coach Jorge Jesus had been settled, Ronaldo ended his international career last Thursday. While he was showered with gratitude and praise from former teammates and rivals, Messi was nowhere to be seen.
The Argentine legend's silence looks striking because, after his farewell match with the Albiceleste, Ronaldo, like other stars, posted a message of support and respect for him.
After playing his final match for Argentina against Benin on October 7, the Inter Miami star wrote a farewell message. Ronaldo surprised many with a heartfelt post on it.
CR7 wrote: 'Leo, after fighting for your country for so many years, you have built a history that will last forever. I have deep respect for what you have achieved for Argentina. Lots of love.'
That was not the first post Ronaldo wrote for Messi. After the death of his historic rival's father, he also offered his condolences. On August 12, Messi posted a long message mourning the loss of his father, and Ronaldo left an emotional comment on it.
He wrote: 'Lots and lots of love for you and your family in this difficult time, Leo. Stay strong.'
Even after searching Messi's social media following Ronaldo's retirement, no post on the subject has been found. While Ronaldo set aside nearly two decades of rivalry to offer sympathy to Messi and react to his retirement, the Argentine legend's silence is now raising questions in the minds of his own fans.
Messi's silence after Ronaldo's international farewell has therefore become a talking point among football fans.
