Blasts rock Dhaka University campus, students hand three suspects to police

Staff Reporter

Students detained three people on suspicion of involvement in a series of explosions on the Dhaka University campus and handed them over to Shahbagh police station. Police confirmed the information on Sunday night.

The detained men are Rezaul Karim, 42, of Natore; Sohel Rana, 33, of Rajshahi; and Nazmul Sad, 33, of Gopalganj.

Earlier, news of several explosions on the university campus came in at around 6:30 in the evening.

Sub-Inspector Mainul Islam of Shahbagh police station said the items recovered from the scene in the initial investigation appear to be something like "chocolate bombs."

Dhaka University Proctor Israfil Ratan confirmed the incident, saying eight to nine explosions had taken place at six to seven locations on the campus.

"We do not know who caused these explosions," he said. "Some shells were found at the scene, which are not made of very dangerous material. It was probably done to create panic. We have informed the police administration."

Eyewitness Shahriar Mostak Didar said students detained the three men from the TSC area.

He added that when the men tried to flee after being detained, students beat them and later handed them over to the police.
