Candle-lighting in Narayanganj demands justice for Twaki murder

A candle-lighting programme was held to mark 164 months of the murder of Tanvir Muhammad Twaki and the absence of justice.
The Narayanganj Cultural Alliance organised the programme at the Narayanganj Central Shaheed Minar on Sunday evening.
At the programme, the slain Twaki's father Rafiur Rabbi said that although the government had changed, there had been no change in the judiciary. The continuity of the judiciary destroyed and left behind by Sheikh Hasina was still going on.
He said that to secure power without hindrance, all previous governments had used the judiciary as a weapon, and the same was still continuing. We want to see the executive separated from the judiciary. We want the independence of the judiciary.
Abdullah Al Amin, member of parliament for Narayanganj-4, said that even in 55 years of independence, an independent judiciary had not been established in the country.
He said that when a criminal does not come under trial after committing a crime, that criminal becomes the ruler of the state. That is what happened in Twaki's case.
Abdullah Al Amin said Shaheed Twaki was a citizen of our generation, and the fact that he had not received justice even in thirteen years was no normal event; it called the character of a state into question. We want justice for Twaki and all murders, and justice for Riya Gop, who was killed in the 2024 uprising.
The programme was chaired by the organisation's president Moni Supantho and conducted by its general secretary Dina Tajrin. Speakers included Rathin Chakraborty, former Press Club president Adv Mahbubur Rahman Masum, Narayanganj Nagorik Committee general secretary Zahidul Haque Dipu, Narayanganj Cultural Alliance adviser Pradip Ghosh Babu, former CPB district president Hafizur Islam, NAP district general secretary Adv Aowlad Hossain, Gonosanghati Andolon district joint coordinator Anjan Das, BSD district organiser SM Kader, Mohila Parishad leader Shova Saha and former Samamona president Dulal Saha.
It is worth noting that Tanvir Muhammad Twaki went missing on 6 March 2013 after leaving his home on Shaeista Khan Road in the city.
Two days later, on 8 March, police recovered Twaki's body from the Kumudini canal of the Shitalakshya river.
