Bangladesh went to lunch on the first day of the first Test against the West Indies at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur. The hosts scored 96 runs for the loss of 2 wickets in 29 overs and were in an advantageous position in the first session.

Bangladesh suffered a blow just before the match over experienced batter Mushfiqur Rahim. Mushfiqur, who has played 106 Tests, was injured during practice in Mirpur yesterday. No decision had been taken on whether he would play, and his name was not in the eleven for the first Test today. Yesterday's injury ruled him out of the Mirpur Test eleven.

Recovering from that blow, Bangladesh, led by Najmul Hossain Shanto, won the toss and batted first. The hosts made a fine start.

But Tanzid Hasan Tamim repeated his tendency not to turn a start into a big innings, in the first Test against the West Indies. Tamim's dismissal quickly broke the opening partnership.

After losing Tamim, Sadman Islam built a partnership with Mominul Haque and steadied the innings after the early blow. The pair had settled at the crease and raised hopes of something substantial for Bangladesh.

Mominul Haque, however, was dismissed playing an irresponsible shot. Despite losing his wicket, Bangladesh remained comfortable in the first session, reaching 96 for 2 by lunch.

This Test series against the West Indies is very important for Bangladesh. To stay in the race for the World Test Championship final, there is no alternative to winning this series, the match context noted.
