A kindergarten girl was seriously injured in an attack by a Class 3 student at Sanskriti Model School in Panchkula, in India's Haryana state. She was transferred in critical condition to PGIMER hospital in Chandigarh.

The accused student is reported to have taken the girl to the first floor of the school building after telling her he would take her to meet her father. Once there, he first began throwing stones at her and then hit her on the head with a tub.

He did not stop there. He took her into an empty classroom and repeatedly struck her on the head, according to the report.

At one point the child lost consciousness, but the attack still did not stop. He then dragged her by the hair around the school premises, the report said.

Immediately after the incident, the injured girl was first taken to the Civil Hospital in Sector 6. When her condition deteriorated, doctors referred her to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, PGIMER, in Chandigarh. Her condition is now described as extremely critical.

The specific reason behind the attack is not yet known, officials said.

After receiving the news, local police reached the school and began an investigation. Police are questioning the school authorities and the accused student's guardians to learn the reason behind the attack and the circumstances surrounding it.
