Back in the classroom after 32 years, Gazipur’s Mojnu passes HSC at 54 with GPA 4.63

Anwar Hossain Mojnu, from Bhitipara village in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur, sat for the HSC examinations at the age of 54 this year and passed with a GPA of 4.63. His achievement has become a talking point in the area and is inspiring many to take a fresh interest in education.
Mojnu is a businessman by profession. His father is Nizam Uddin Kaiya. He is the father of one son and one daughter.
Mojnu passed his SSC in 1991 from Trimohani BD High School. He then enrolled in the science group at Barmi Degree College and sat for the HSC examination. But failing higher mathematics brought his student life to a halt. Out of frustration, he did not sit for the exam the following year.
Life then took him down a different path. He started a poultry farming business and gradually became absorbed in his working life. After marriage, a long 32 years passed by in carrying out family responsibilities. Amid family, children, business and household duties, his dream of studying was lost in the flow of time.
Yet Mojnu could never fully forget that unfinished chapter of his student life. To turn that wish into reality, he took a bold decision. Without telling anyone in the family, he enrolled at Pubail Technical College in Gazipur. With the poultry business on one side and family responsibilities on the other, he made time and resumed regular study.
Overcoming every obstacle, Mojnu sat for the HSC examination this time. When the results were published, he had passed with a GPA of 4.63. Neither the weight of age nor the fear of a long break could hold him back.
Mojnu’s interest is not limited to his own education; he is also keen on spreading education. He currently serves as a guardian member of Bhitipara Kobbat Hamid Kaiya High School.
Mojnu said he took the initiative to finish his unfinished education in order to inspire the new generation of students and those who dropped out midway for various reasons. He does not want to stop here. He now wants to enrol in a bachelor’s programme and eventually earn a master’s degree. He believes that with strong willpower and perseverance, it is possible to start anew at any age.
His elderly mother, Anwara Khatun, is the happiest at her son’s success. She is proud to see him return to his studies. In an emotional voice, she said, ‘My son is studying well — it is truly a matter of pride.’
Teachers are also viewing Mojnu’s achievement positively. Rajab Ali Moral, headteacher of Bhitipara Kobbat Hamid Kaiya High School, said, ‘There is no age for education. Receiving an education at any age is a person’s right. Mojnu Kaiya is an education enthusiast. He is a member of our institution’s managing committee. We are proud of his result.’
