Comilla University Plans Three New Departments From the New Academic Session
Comilla University is planning to launch three new departments from the 2026-27 academic session, the university administration has said. If the University Grants Commission (UGC) approves, the departments will open under the engineering faculty. The administration said the number of seats at the university will also increase in the new session.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr M M Sharif Karim confirmed the matter on Thursday afternoon (November 5).
University sources said that at a meeting with the UGC on November 2, the university authorities proposed launching four new departments. The proposed departments are Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering, Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, and Robotics.
Earlier, on September 9, 2025, the university administration applied to the UGC for permission to include 18 new departments in the university's organogram. The proposal to launch four departments followed from that application.
Of the four proposed departments, the UGC has given preliminary assurance for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science and for Electrical and Electronic Engineering. University sources said there is also a possibility that Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering will be launched.
Registrar (additional charge) Mohammad Nurul Karim Chowdhury said the UGC has initially assured the university about launching Artificial Intelligence and Data Science and Electrical and Electronic Engineering. However, Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering may also be launched, he said.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr M M Sharif Karim said: 'We have sought permission from the UGC to open four departments. But we have received verbal permission for two. The UGC has formed a committee regarding launching a total of three departments, including one more. We hope three departments will be added in the new academic session.' He said the admission test notice has to be issued in a few days, so the approvals need to come quickly.
