Leaders of the movement to establish the Comilla University Central Students' Union (KUCSU), on behalf of general students, have submitted a memorandum to the vice-chancellor demanding quick approval and implementation of the draft KUCSU constitution and the immediate announcement of an election roadmap.

The memorandum was submitted to the vice-chancellor of Comilla University at noon on Thursday (5 November).

The memorandum demanded that a central students' union election be held quickly to ensure the democratic rights, institutional representation and leadership development opportunities of the university's general students.

It said that because there has been no elected central students' union for a long time, students' opportunities for independent and institutional representation have remained limited. As a result, a vacuum has been created in raising students' reasonable demands, protecting their rights and playing a representative role in solving the university's various problems.

It demanded a quick review and approval of the draft KUCSU constitution, publication of a full election roadmap and schedule, formation of a neutral election commission, and ensuring a free, fair and neutral election environment.

Afsar Uddin Ifti, a student of the 2022-23 session of the university's Department of Accounting and Information Systems, said they are demanding an immediate central students' union (KUCSU) election to remove the long-standing vacuum in democratic representation of Comilla University students. He demanded that the constitution be approved and implemented in the quickest time and a specific election roadmap be announced.

Afsar Uddin Ifti also said KUCSU is not the interest of any individual or specific organisation; it is the democratic right of all students of Comilla University. So, without any further delay, effective steps should be taken to hold the KUCSU election quickly, he said.

Maruf Sheikh, a student of the 2020-21 session of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, said holding a students' union election is a reasonable demand of the students and it is also a democratic right.
