Hashim Amla Not in the Running to Be Bangladesh Batting Consultant, BCB Meeting Learns
Former South Africa cricketer Hashim Amla is, for now, not in the running to become the Bangladesh team's batting consultant. The information emerged from the BCB working committee meeting held yesterday. The board wants to give the responsibility to someone for a long term, which is why the thinking on Amla is not moving forward for now.
The final Test of the series against the West Indies is under way in Sylhet. Before this home series began, a change was made to the Tigers' coaching panel, with Mohammad Ashraful removed from the post of batting coach. Ashraful had long been criticised for the batters' failures, and the BCB eventually removed him.
Mohammad Salahuddin is handling the role of interim batting coach for the West Indies series. Several names were in discussion for a full-term appointment as the new batting coach. They included Pakistan's Mohammad Yousuf, South Africa's Hashim Amla, and a former cricketer of Sri Lanka and England.
The Bangladesh team will tour South Africa this month. Talks on making Hashim Amla the batting consultant for that tour had reportedly advanced considerably. However, after the BCB meeting, that possibility is understood to be off the table for now.
The meeting learned that the board wants to give the responsibility to someone for a long term. The board is also willing to accept a delay of another couple of months if that is what it takes to get everything right. In other words, instead of appointing a consultant for a short term, the BCB is leaning towards a full-term structure.
The same meeting also discussed the Purbachal stadium. The contract with the previous company, Popular, has been cancelled there. The meeting discussed that the BCB will again issue a notice inviting tenders.
The meeting also urged that work on the Barisal ground be finished quickly for the Domestic Three T20 format.
